Ethan Johns Conducts the BBC Music Orchestra

October 6, 2014

In the new BBC Music tv spot, Ethan Johns conducts the BBC Music Orchestra. He also the produced the star studded version of the Beach Boys ‘God Only Knows’ which soundtracks the advert. The promotional film was made to mark the launch of BBC Music and it’s impressive schedule of programmes celebrating the talent, diversity and music passion found throughout the BBC.

Ethan, alongside Ken Nelson, was tasked with producing ‘God Only Knows’ as a charity single for Children In Need featuring 27 Internationally acclaimed artists. The single will be available to download from midnight on Tuesday 7 October as a unique collaboration between Sony, Warner and Universal Music. Ethan said of the production “One of the things that interested me most about this project was the idea of bringing together so many different styles of music and as a great opportunity to bring the musical community together in celebration of the thing that we all love. To make so much diversity work within one piece of music was quite a challenge. I feel like I’ve taken a 1000-piece puzzle and just thrown it in the air. I’m standing there trying to grab them as they come down and put them into place.”

The full list of artists is as follows… Brian Wilson, Sir Elton John, One Direction, Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, Jake Bugg, Lorde, Emeli Sandé, Chris Martin, Kylie Minogue, Paloma Faith, Sam Smith, Florence Welch, Chrissie Hynde, Brian May and Dave Grohl, Alison Balsom, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese, Nicola Benedetti, Eliza Carthy, Baaba Maal, Jamie Cullum, Jaz Dhami, Zane Lowe, Lauren Laverne, Katie Derham, Gareth Malone and Jools Holland, Tees Valley Youth Choir and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

I was lucky enough to shoot a portrait of Ethan last year at Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl Record Cafe. A really nice man who seriously knows music and if you are unfamiliar with his work he was at the desk producing for the likes of Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Ray Lamontagne, Kings Of Leon, Tom Jones and Paul McCartney. You can check out more of his production credits here not to mention his recent embarkment on his solo career as a musician and songwriter.
