Jennifer Owens – The Young History EP
May 18, 2016
For the last few months I’ve been working alongside the very talented Guy Gyngell who has been developing and producing Jennifer Owens – The Young History EP.
Guy is a songwriter and producer and also heads up the fledgling label, Annexe Records. He has an uncanny, intuitive ability to hear the route on which to take a song in the studio; and the results from working with Jen are no exception. Jennifer is an outstanding singer from Basildon, Essex, who collaborated with New York based songwriter Scott Alan as part of his London Hippodrome Showcase. Guy and Jennifer started writing together last year and have crafted a sound rooted in great, classic songwriting; informed by the likes of Barbara Streisand, Karen Carpenter and Celine Dion.
In January, Jennifer performed a special, intimate, invite only show in the round at Portsmouth Guildhall. Accompanied by piano (Andrew Holdsworth, who arranged the piano parts for the record) and a string quartet, the elegant arrangements laid bare Jennifer’s outstanding vocal performance. With the support of a crew from Global Fire Creative, I directed a film of the concert which will be available to view very soon. It really is a wonderful record of a special evening and a testament to Jennifer’s ability as a singer.
During the EP’s writing and production process I have enjoyed photographing Jennifer for The Young History EP cover artwork and supporting imagery. This was shot entirely on 35mm and medium format film. In addition I shot footage of Jen visiting her hometown and Director of Photography, Matt Gillan, captured the recording session at Miloco’s Livingston 1 Studio where the record was tracked. I then spent time with Guy editing the following film as a way of Introducing Jennifer to a wider audience.
